Electrician Trainee

To complete his or her Electrician Trainee training, a student must master dozens of skills in the following categories:

Safety
Practice safety with live circuits, ladders and scaffolds; use safety equipment properly.

Identify and use pouch tools and specialty tools


Basic electricity theory (Ohm’s Law, power law, series and parallel circuits)


Understanding of and familiarity with National Electric code (NEC)


Blueprints and specifications
Read a rule, measure objects within 1/8” tolerance, identify common electrical symbols.

Residential and commercial wiring methods
Find/explain NEC requirements; install cable, conduits, breakers; identify boxes/fittings.

Load centers
Identify safety switch enclosures, load center accessories/parts, panel interior configs.

Overcurrent protection and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI)
Identify fuses/breakers rated 600V or less; install, test GFCI receptacles/circuit breakers.

Device and lighting installation
Install full range of switches/receptacles; install surface, recessed and HID light fixtures.

Communications (chime circuit, coaxial cable, residential/commercial telephone system)


Residential service installations and equipment connections
Install/connect overhead raceway, meter base, underground conductors, appliance supply cord, disconnecting means for HVAC equipment/safety switch, cover plates on devices

Old work installations and troubleshooting
Install box/cable in existing partition wall, patch holes, identify problems and troubleshoot.

Task planning, organization skills and human relations
Acquire materials/tools to complete a job; maintain positive working relationships with superiors, customers and fellow employees.
