To complete his or her Facilities Maintenance training, a student must master dozens of skills in the following categories:

Use, storage and handling of all tools and equipment, and general safety


Basic wall construction


Drywall/plaster surfaces, trim and moldings
Repair trim or molding; repair cracks in walls; tape, bed and feather drywall.

Weatherproofing with caulking and weatherstripping


Gutters and downspouts (clean, inspect, repair and replace)


Floor surfaces
Repair sheet vinyl flooring and tile.

Pipes, drains, faucets, water closets
Cut/join pipes, clean/repair drains, repair sinks and faucets, repair toilets.

Circuit breakers, fuses and circuits
Troubleshoot and repair.

Power supply cords, switches and receptacle, interior and exterior lighting


Paint and tile


Basic heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
Identify/explain heating and cooling systems. Tension belts, lubricate bearings, replace thermostats, clean/replace filters.

Groundskeeping
Prune shrubs and trees, use mowers/edgers.

Building safety and security, administration
