To complete his or her Plasterer training, a student must master dozens of skills in the following categories:

Fundamentals of plaster
Characteristics and properties of the basic kinds of plaster, materials used, and how to mix plaster, advantages and limitations of different kinds of plaster.

Preparation and application methods
Apply mortar with hawk and trowel, trim angles with a trowel, identify common texture finish coat, and knowledge of lime and gypsum sandfinishes and proper spraying applications.

Exterior insulation finish systems
Understand mixing techniques, identify tools used to install EIFS, perform caulking operations and back wrap, attach foam manually and with mechanical foam fasteners, use hot wire equipment, lay out and cut aesthetic and expansion joints, embed meshes properly, apply base and finish coats.

Drywall and veneer base hanging and finishing
Hang drywall, apply drywall compound and tape joints properly, two taping systems used for veneer base, tape veneer joints, use a glazed finishing coat, mix and apply glaze coat, mix and apply fireproof materials with both spray and hand application, patch gypsum plaster, portland stucco, EIFS, drywall and conventional gypsum finish coats: smooth finish, sand finish and textured.

Scaffold building


Lathing
Apply metal, paper back lath, channel iron and metal studs; tie metal lath and mechanical screw to proper supports, cut and apply metal trim. Proper handling of rib lath, 2 lath, diamond lath and self-furring lath.
