How To Enroll
Call: 1-877-410-0068 You will be directed to an Admissions Counselor in your area who can answer your questions, check your records and discuss the eligibility requirements with you. If you are eligible for the program, the Admissions Counselor will talk with you about what Job Corps training will best suit your needs. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
What should I bring with me? What should I leave at home? Can I earn high school credits or a diploma? Can I get a job off center? If I don't like it, can I leave? May I attend church? Can I go shopping? To the mall? Can I bring my car? My bike? What is the smoking policy? Can my parents, family or friends call or visit me? What happens during holidays? What does a dorm room look like? Is there a curfew? What should I bring with me? You should bring clothing (leisure, underclothing, appropriate clothing for the type of vocation you will be in, a warm jacket, sweaters, sweatsuits for after work hours, leisure shoes, a raincoat), personal hygiene items, a towel, a wash cloth, a watch, an umbrella and an alarm clock. You may also want to bring a small, portable stereo or radio. (Only stereos with 75 watts or less will be allowed in the residences.) Also bring the following: Immunization records Copy of your GED or HS Diploma Social Security Card Copy of birth certificate Driver's License Name/Address/Phone # of at least 2 contact people (in case of emergency) and A COMMITMENT TO COMPLETE A VOCATION! What will the center provide? The center will provide bed linens, blankets, a pillow, a bedspread. We also provide laundry detergent and sanitary items for women. What should I leave at home? Do not bring music amplifiers, expensive jewelry, or clothing with alcohol, drug or gang related messages. No drugs/alcohol. No weapons. No pets. Can I earn high school credits or a diploma? YES! Tongue Point is an accredited special purpose school through the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Please bring a copy of your high school transcript so we can determine if you will be eligible to enter the high school program right away or if you will have to take GED classes. Can I get a job off center? Yes, on weekends and during evening hours as long as you meet the Center's expectations and the job doesn't interfere with your required center responsibilities and training. If I don't like it, can I leave? Yes, there is a process to go through (like giving notice when quitting a job). Job Corps is a voluntary program. We want you to succeed and we will help you to make the decision that is best for you. May I attend church? Yes. There is transportation available to all area churches. Can I go shopping? To the mall? Yes. The town of Astoria is about three miles away and buses are provided after work and on weekends. Although there are no malls in the area, there is a Fred Meyer and several small stores in the area. Occasionally the center will have a Saturday trip to a large mall in Portland for a day of shopping. Can I bring my car? My bike? Students who live on the center are not allowed to have vehicles at the center. You can bring a bicycle. A helmet must be worn while riding your bike on center. What is the smoking policy? Smoking is allowed outdoors in designated areas only. If you are under 18 years of age, you are not allowed to smoke. Can my parents, family or friends call or visit me? Yes. Each residence has pay phones available for use after the work day. Family members are welcome to visit on center anytime after the work day or on weekends. What happens during holidays? You can go home. You may need to provide your own transportation. What does a dorm room look like? At Tongue Point there are 4 dorms, and each one is different. You will have 1, 2 or 3 roommates. Some dormitories have a shared bathroom between two rooms; other dorms have a common bathroom on each floor. Each dorm has laundry rooms, TV rooms, lounge areas and kitchens available to prepare a meal or a snack. Is there a curfew? Yes. On work nights you will need to be in your room by 10:00pm; on weekends you will need to be in your room by 12:30am. HAVE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT TONGUE POINT?
